Each day’s direction

Once, when I was 12, I went on a field trip in Yosemite. I was tired, but the tour guide told me something that resonated. “You just have to keep putting one foot in front of the other.” I hadn’t realized that walking was a process that could be simplified even further–one foot in front of the other foot. The goal wasn’t to get to the top of the hill. The goal was just to move each foot a few inches, every few seconds.

Did you move closer towards achieving your goals today? Or did you stagnate?

Did you spend all day procrastinating? Or did you get at least one task done?

No day is a failure, as long as you did SOMETHING that pushes you towards your goals. It’s the direction that matters, not the destination.

If you haven’t done anything today to lead you to your goals, spend the time now and do SOMETHING. ANYTHING. If your goal is to get in shape, just do a set of pushups. If your goal is to build your business, finish one easy task related to your business. Just take it one step at a time.

Maneesh,

Great, concise post. I have a small note on my desk that says “Do One Thing to Advance the Cause Each Day” so I act on this thought every day as well as on every hike. Have an awesome 2012!
